Aqua Security on Thursday released a report which found that only 3% of respondents surveyed recognize that a container — in and of itself — does not function as a security boundary, indicating that 97% are unaware of basic container security principles, often overestimating the default security properties of containers.
Aqua Security CTO Amir Jerbi says it’s apparent most organizations are unaware of how malware inserted within a containerized application can be employed to take over an entire host. It then becomes relatively trivial to compromise the rest of the IT environment.
“…the company’s argument about the complex process of securing the supply chain is also on point. While containerization facilitates security improvements — such as security-as-code, isolation on the host, and immutable images — containers deployed without thought to security or the supply chain provide no guarantees that malicious code or vulnerabilities may have crept in.”
